We all have stuff. From clothes, to electronics, to toys. We also have mementos, you know, those things that have a memory attached to them. Some mementos have deep meaning, such as the memory of a passed love one, while others just offers a fond memory. Mementos are one of the hardest things to purge.
For me, I had things that reminded me of my young life living on other continents. While I sit with a box of stuff in front of me I am reminded of specific things that I did way back when. But when it come right down to it, I really don’t need stuff to remind me of my past. I remember all too well my past. I remember my friends, my favorite places, and the fun that I had when I was there. When it first occurred to me that I should purge these items I kind of cringed.
At first I discarded a few items that really had no value. Then I discarded more. I kept those things that had value, or had deep memories. What made me feel better about getting rid of some of these items was to give them back to the person that gave them to me, or gave them to somebody that would give meaning to me.
While I purged just about everything, I kept some items from my past. I can look at the shelves in my apartment as see a couple items right now. What you purge, and what you keep is up to you. Remember, it’s just stuff.
